Sales mock interview questions

Sales interviews test whether you can do the job in the room: how you handle rejection, how you build a pipeline and whether you can sell, often to the interviewer, on the spot.

What interviewers look for

Results
Targets you hit, with numbers.
Resilience
Handling rejection and bouncing back.
Discovery
Asking before pitching.
Process
How you build and manage a pipeline.

The questions to practise

Grouped by type. The note beside each says what the interviewer is really testing, which is what your answer has to show.

    Results and method.
  • Describe a deal you lost. What did you learn?

Situational

  • A key client says they are moving to a competitor. What do you do?

  • You are behind target with two weeks left in the quarter. What is your plan?

  • A prospect goes silent after a great demo. How do you follow up?

An example answer, told with STAR

Situation, task, action, result. The structure is what to copy; the story should be yours.

“Tell me about your biggest win.”

  1. Situation

A regional retailer had used the same supplier for eight years.

  2. Task

Win a trial without competing on price.

  3. Action

I spent the first two calls asking about their stock-outs, found they were losing weekend sales, and proposed a pilot at three stores built around delivery times.

  4. Result

The pilot cut stock-outs by a third, and they signed a two-year contract worth 140% of my quarterly target.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pitching features before asking questions
  • Results without numbers
  • Blaming the product or the market for lost deals

Sales interview: questions

What questions are asked in a sales interview?
Questions about your results and targets, lost deals, objection handling and pipeline, plus role-plays such as “sell me this pen”.
How do I answer “sell me this pen”?
Ask before you sell: who they are, how they use a pen, what frustrates them. Then connect the pen to that need and ask for the sale. Interviewers are testing discovery more than the pitch.
