An example answer, told with STAR

Situation, task, action, result. The structure is what to copy; the story should be yours.

“Tell me about a time you advocated for a patient.”

  1. Situation

    An elderly post-operative patient seemed confused, which the team put down to age.

  2. Task

    Make sure a possible complication was not being missed.

  3. Action

    I checked her observations against her baseline, raised it with the doctor using SBAR and asked for bloods to be taken.

  4. Result

    The results showed an infection, treatment started that evening and her confusion cleared within two days.

Mistakes to avoid

  • General statements about caring, without a specific patient story
  • Skipping the escalation step in safety scenarios
  • Answers that do not show how you worked with the team
